
How We Evaluate Queen Quality Before She Earns Her Keep
Most beekeeping operations accept queens on faith and call it evaluation. Here’s the queen quality assessment protocol we actually run before a queen earns her keep in a Honey Outlaws hive.

Texas survivor bees aren’t lucky. A colony that lives through a Central Texas summer, a July dearth that can stretch into September or even October, and year-round varroa pressure has earned its place. The genetics carried it there, far more than anything you did at the hive.
If you keep losing colonies while running packages reared outside Texas on a calendar treatment schedule, the bees are usually the problem, not your beekeeping. Most of that stock comes out of Georgia, California, and Hawaii. None of those places put a colony through what Texas does. That’s a hard thing to accept. Most of the advice in the books was written for a climate Texas doesn’t have. It quietly assumes mild summers and a real winter brood break. The traits that actually keep a hive alive in Texas are heritable and selectable. That’s what separates Texas survivor bees from a box of bees that just got shipped to a Texas address.
Start with the heat. A run of hundred-degree days pulls the foragers off nectar and onto hauling water to keep the hive cool. Almost nothing comes in. A queen who keeps laying flat out through that runs the head count up past what the colony can feed. Too many mouths, no nectar behind them, and the stores drain in a hurry.
Then the dearth. Central Texas nectar mostly quits in high summer, when heat and drought shut the wildflowers down, and it doesn’t come back in force until fall. A colony that can’t read that signal and throttle its brood rearing eats through its reserves. It starves in the middle of the year, often the hardest time to diagnose.
On top of both of those, varroa never lets up. There’s no long winter brood pause here to knock the mite population back. A colony that can’t hold the mites down on its own builds a bigger and bigger mite load through the season. It carries that load most of the year, not just a stretch of it.
This is where genetics comes in. Honey bee populations show real geographic differences from one region to the next, and signs of local adaptation to the conditions they evolved under. Pile heat, dearth, and year-round varroa onto one colony and you’ve stacked three hard tests at once. The bees that grew up here pass all three. A shipped-in package might hold for a season or two, but it rarely lasts.
For the first year, fresh packages usually look fine. The bees build, they make a crop, the mite counts stay low enough to ignore. That first season is misleading. A new package starts with almost no mites and a fresh queen, so the genetics never get tested. Year two gets harder. By year three, most beekeepers running purchased packages with no selection behind them and treating with chemicals on a calendar are fighting the same losses they started with. Most assume they’re doing something wrong at the hive.
Usually they aren’t. The bees never carried the genetics to hold the mite down on their own. The calendar treatment they leaned on is losing ground as varroa grows resistant to it. The national loss numbers say the same thing. The 2024-2025 Project Apis m. colony-loss survey documented losses running catastrophically high, with commercial operations averaging 62 percent. Researchers are still working through the cause across several factors, and varroa’s resistance to amitraz is one of them. Varroa and the viruses it carries have driven colony loss for years. The way through it is bees that hold the mite load down on their own, between treatments, instead of leaning on chemical inputs to do all the work. That resistance is the trait we select for.
Three traits do most of the work. The first is hygienic behavior. Workers find and pull diseased, dead, or mite-infested brood out of cells before the trouble spreads. It’s a broad, heritable colony-level disease-resistance trait, and it’s the base we breed from. Select for it and the offspring carry it. Better yet, you can measure it, so it’s not a matter of opinion. Before you breed toward it, get the hygienic vs. VSH distinction straight, because the varroa-targeted version of the trait is its own thing.
The second trait is thriftiness through dearth. A good colony reads the summer shutdown and tightens the brood nest. It rations stores instead of spending them on brood it can’t feed in August. A hive still cranking brood with empty supers in late summer has a genetics problem wearing a feeding problem’s clothes. Bees carry measurable ecological adaptation to the climate they come from, right down to how their bodies run. The colonies that hold up here are the ones whose instincts are set to a Central Texas calendar, summer shutdown and all.
The third trait is timing. A Texas-adapted colony runs on a Central Texas clock. It ramps up brood for the early flows, then backs off through the summer dearth instead of laying flat out when nothing’s blooming. The first flows come early down here. Huisache and agarita open in late winter. Mesquite carries the buildup into spring, ahead of the dearth that shuts the year down. A colony built on the wrong clock either peaks too late and misses those flows, or keeps cranking brood it can’t feed come July.
Getting them out of winter strong enough to work those early flows is on us. Winter here is short and mild, and the flows come fast behind it. So we keep the colony building, not just hunkered down. We run 1:1 syrup through the cool months to mimic a nectar flow and keep the queen laying. Bees raised in winter live far longer than summer bees, months instead of weeks. There’s no foraging to burn them out, so those numbers hold right up to the first bloom.
Solid bottom boards do the rest. A closed floor instead of a screen keeps the brood nest warmer. The colony broods up faster in late winter than it would over an open screen. None of it pays off on bad genetics, though. You can feed a badly timed colony all winter and still watch it build at the wrong moment.
Texas feral bees have been crossing with Africanized stock since the 1990s. No sense pretending they haven’t. The temperament cost is real. Africanized influence can make a colony hotter and quicker to defend, and you handle that through hard selection and requeening rather than wishing it away. The order matters: hygiene first, brood pattern second, temperament third. A hot colony that clears hygiene and brood is carrying genetics worth keeping, so we don’t just write it off. We breed the hygiene forward, mostly through its drones and controlled crosses, and requeen the working hive with a calmer line. The colony ends up clean and workable both. What we won’t do is keep a stinging hive limping along on its own hot queen, year after year.
The upside is the part most people skip past. Those same feral lines have sat under thirty years of brutal, treatment-free natural selection. What came through tends to carry strong hygienic behavior. The lines we’ve kept hold their stores tight, too. Folded carefully into a controlled breeding program, that feral base is part of what makes a Texas survivor hive genuinely tough. That toughness comes out of the selection work. No shipped-in package or queen arrives with it.

Selection means nothing without numbers behind it. To score hygienic behavior, we run a pin test. Pierce a patch of sealed brood, come back in a day, and count what the colony cleared. The strong lines pull better than 95 percent, but the bar to breed from is 90. A colony that can’t clear 90 in that day doesn’t get to breed, no matter how much honey it put up that year. On mites, the bar is an alcohol wash at or under 2 percent, year-round. The bees have to hold it there on their own, not off the back of the last treatment we ran. Plenty of beekeepers let it ride to 3 percent before they act. We don’t.
When a wash comes back over 2 percent, that queen is done. We’ll vaporize and run a VarroxSan strip through the brood break to save the bees and the comb. But the genetics that let the mites get there don’t earn a second season. When a queen’s records say she isn’t carrying the traits, you requeen her instead of propping up weak stock year after year.
Mites are the one call we make on a single test. Everything else earns its verdict over several seasons, because one good year can be luck and one bad year can be weather. We watch a queen’s hygiene, brood pattern, and temperament play out before we make the call. A queen earns her place by proving the rest under the conditions that actually kill hives here.
Do the selection work, and you quit replacing the same dead-out every spring. That’s how we keep bees.
